During the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival, JazzTimes set up a make-shift video production studio backstage inside the old barracks of Fort Adams. During two afternoons, a succession of artists—including Hiromi, Esperanza Spalding, Ambrose Akinmusire, Anat Cohen, Steve Coleman, Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Miguel Zenon and many others—came in to talk about the festival, jazz education and their own projects. We will be posting these interviews at jazztimes.com over the next few months. You can also see more of these video inteviews at the JazzTimes YouTube channel.
Here is the Avishai Interview.
We are pleased to announce the release of two new recordings on Anzic Records, Avishai Cohen’s introducing Triveni and Eli Degibri’s Israeli Song.
Israeli Song showcases Degibri and an all-star lineup consisting of pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster. Recorded at Sear Sound Studios in New York by James Farber (live direct to two track), and produced by Degibri, the 11-track set features the quartet on several Degibri originals, as well as compositions by Mehldau, Foster and Carter and the classics “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and Dizzy Gillespie’s “Bebop.”
Cohen’s introducing Triveni, features longtime collaborators Omer Avital on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. Drawing from hard-bop, funk, and avant-garde, introducing Triveni takes on music from the Great American songbook to Cohen’s original compositions, and his provocative and always soulful playing has never sounded so assured.
Visit the Anzic Store to hear and purchase both recordings. Also available in record stores everywhere.

Anzic Records is a New York City based recording label specializing in good music. We began releasing recordings in 2005. We strive to provide our artists with everything they need to achieve commercial success for their artistic efforts. We believe musicians are entitled to a much larger share of the financial rewards than has traditionally been available to them from the music recording industry. We believe musicians must, and can, make significant contributions, apart from making music, to the benefit of their careers and, to this end, we expect the musicians we work with to want to acquire the fullest possible understanding of all aspects of our joint enterprise.
For those curious about the origin of the name “Anzic”…it is a contraction of “ANat [Cohen] and muZIC [i.e."music" spelled subject to artistic license]…devised by Ms. Cohen…whose debut album “Place & Time” was the first Anzic Records release. We think it fitting to retain the name “Anzic” to honor her for catalyzing the creation of our company.
In the hierarchy of interactions, we are willing and able to do transactions, open to conversations, and always looking for relationships.
